Book Hooks…

22/09/2011

More than 100 books hooks are now on display in the library.

A book hook is a short and sharp blurb designed to hook attract you to a book, written by someone who was hooked enjoyed it and wants to recommend it.
It can be used in book talks or speed booking sessions. We used them to present 3 books in 1 minute in Assembly.

In another way, a “Hook Book” is the book that hooked you into reading, the book which made you love reading, the book which made you realise how good it is to read. As far as I remember, the book which hooked me into reading was Enid Blyton’s “Five on a Treasure Island”, first of the Famous Five series and when I have finished the series, I went on with anything on the small school library shelves and started my reading career…

Which book hooked YOU into reading?

All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have had the pleasure to be presented a dozen books for their age, by Bob Docherty.

Bob Docherty is a professional book reviewer who travels from Cape Reinga to Bluff to talk to kids about the books he prefers. His aim is to motivate you to read, as he says: “The best thing you can do for yourself is READ, READ, READ.”

Check out his blog for great books reviews:

Bob the Book Talker

30/03/2010

We had the pleasure to welcome Bob Docherty, ‘the book talker”, in the library last Wednesday. Four Y7 and Y8 classes have enjoyed listening to his presentation of about twenty MACLIC books and a few new books too.

In 2 or 3 minutes, with a book in the hand, he talked about the plot, what is special with the book, the reading level, he sometimes reads a page, leave a few hints for reading and how reading is good for you…

The most popular are Don’t Call me Jojo, Cirque du Freak, Night Hunting, Wolf Brother and Red Kayak, on which there are many reserves.

You can find his book recommendations on his blog http://bobsbooksnz.wordpress.com/
